How to Choose a Software Development Agency in India

A practical checklist for choosing a software development agency in India — from scoping and pricing to code ownership, communication and support.

By Mustafa Abbas7 min read

Hiring a software development agency is one of the highest-leverage decisions a business can make — and one of the easiest to get wrong. India has thousands of agencies, from solo freelancers to large outsourcing firms. Here's the checklist we'd use if we were on your side of the table.

1. Start with the outcome, not the technology

A good agency asks about your customers, your revenue model and what success looks like in six months before it talks about frameworks. If the first call is a list of technologies, that's a signal the agency sells hours, not outcomes.

Ask: "What would you build first, and why?"

2. Insist on a written, fixed scope

Vague estimates lead to vague invoices. You should receive a document that lists features, user flows, integrations, assumptions and what is explicitly out of scope — with a timeline broken into weekly or bi-weekly milestones.

3. Find out who will actually write the code

Many agencies sell with seniors and deliver with juniors. Ask to meet the people who will be on your project and how long they'll stay on it.

4. Look for visible progress every week

The best signal of a healthy project is something you can click. Preview deployments, TestFlight builds and short demo videos beat monthly status reports every time.

5. Make sure you own everything

You should own the repository, the cloud accounts, the domain and the design files from day one — not "on final payment". Ask for documentation and a recorded walkthrough at hand-off.

6. Ask about life after launch

Software is never finished. Ask what's included in the warranty period, how bugs are prioritised and what a support retainer looks like.

7. Check the work, not the logos

Case studies should explain the problem, the approach and measurable results. Ask for a reference you can call.

A quick checklist

  • Clear outcome and success metrics agreed up front
  • Fixed scope with weekly milestones
  • Named senior team members
  • Weekly live builds
  • Full code and infrastructure ownership
  • Defined post-launch support
  • Real case studies with results
